Across it, two pale, translucent bands sweep diagonally from corner to corner, ridged and rippled like poured glass or a frozen waterfall, with the hues beneath shimmering faintly through. The bright color seems to rise from beneath the white, as if light were breaking through after a storm. Colangelo sprayed the spectrum first, then poured the clear, pearly layers over it and let them ripple and set as they wished. Part of her COSMOS series, it is an open-hearted painting about promise and the color that comes after rain.

Waking to this each morning is a gentle pleasure. In a bedroom, a child's room or a bright kitchen, it lifts the mood of the whole space, and pale walls, light oak, simple ceramics and soft cotton textiles let the palette glow without competition, morning after morning.

Mixed media on panel, 18 x 18 in (45.7 x 45.7 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
