Remembering, a modern abstract painting in mixed media on panel by Monterey artist Mandie Colangelo, lets soft circles appear and fade across a field of moss green and deep teal, like reflections on a pond or memories surfacing one at a time. Their outlines are pale and chalky, some clear, some barely there, and broad diagonal sweeps of blue run behind them as though a current were carrying the past gently along. The surface has a velvety, printed quality, full of tiny flecks and scuffs that give it the feel of something weathered and well loved. Colangelo pressed and layered the color, lifting and revealing as the work grew, and let the rings land where they would. From her COSMOS series, it offers a quiet place to sit with what matters most.
Reflective and calm, it belongs in a study, a bedroom or a room that looks out onto the garden. Sage walls, potted ferns, aged brass and stone give it a peaceful setting that suits its gentle rhythm, and soft daylight brings out the velvety texture.
Mixed media on panel, 18 x 18 in (45.7 x 45.7 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
