An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Tamlaitk - Namnit is a profile portrait of an elder with long white hair falling loose past the shoulders and eyes nearly closed, wrapped in a heavy dark blanket over a patterned shirt and set against a dark background. Curtis titled the portrait with the sitter's name and people and placed it among his portraits of the Chinookan peoples of the Columbia River. Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Wallawalla, Umatilla, Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes.
From Volume 8, facing page 88. Printed on Holland Van Gelder, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets. Titled in the plate lower left (TÁMLAITK - NAMNIT), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches. Sheet: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number is written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
