Wishing Season, an abstract expressionist mixed media painting on canvas by Monterey artist Mandie Colangelo, sends ribbons of golden yellow splashing and branching across a dreamy sky of rose, violet, sage and peach, like streamers caught mid-celebration. Some lines arc in wide loops, others drip into small droplets, and in places the gold is dusted with glitter that sparkles as the light shifts. A coral glow burns at the center, softened by violet haze. Along the left edge a tall plum column rises, thick and textured, while small dabs of cobalt scatter beneath it like confetti and a glinting cluster of silver and green settles at the base. Colangelo poured and flung the gold freely, enjoying every surprise. A bright note in her COSMOS series, it is pure hopefulness, a sense that good things are on their way.
Festive yet soft, it brings a celebratory note to a dining area, a bedroom or a cheerful hallway. Warm plaster or pale pink walls suit its palette, and fine glassware, candles and fresh flowers on a nearby table make every day feel like a small occasion.
Mixed media on canvas, 20 x 20 in (50.8 x 50.8 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
