Where Weather Begins feels like a sky still deciding what kind of day to be. Mustard yellow glows in the upper corner, a tall column of turquoise and cerulean rises through the left, and on the right a creamy light opens, ringed by a soft halo of coral. Lower down the air turns tender with lilac, violet and the faintest pink, the edges melting into one another like mist at sunrise. There are no hard lines anywhere, only atmosphere. Colangelo built the whole canvas from gentle layers of spray, letting each color bloom, fade and overlap without ever forcing it. Created for her COSMOS series, it feels fresh and full of possibility, the first breath of something about to change.
Placed near a window, it shifts with the changing light through the day. A sunroom, a kitchen or a bright entry suits it especially well, alongside rattan, stone floors, pale linen curtains and a few leafy plants that bring a breath of the outdoors inside.
Mixed media on canvas, 20 x 20 in (50.8 x 50.8 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
