Curtis's The North American Indian. Wishham Female Profile is a portrait of an elderly Wishram woman seen in profile, her gray hair drawn back into a long braid, strands of beads at her throat and a broadly striped blanket around her shoulders, set against a dark background. The Wishram, which Curtis spelled Wishham, lived on the north bank of the Columbia River near The Dalles. Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Wallawalla, Umatilla, Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes.

From Volume 8, facing page 108. Printed on Japanese vellum, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, with a smooth, creamy surface that holds the fine detail of the gravure. Titled in the plate lower left (WISHHAM FEMALE PROFILE), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
