An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. The Scout - Nez Perce shows a Nez Perce rider on a dark horse at the top of a rocky rise, seen from below against a pale sky. His long hair falls loose over his shoulders, he holds a looped rope in one hand, and he wears a breechcloth and beaded moccasins. The Nez Perce, or Nimiipuu, of the Columbia Plateau were known for their fine horses. Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Wallawalla, Umatilla, Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes.
From Volume 8, facing page 44. Printed on Holland Van Gelder, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets. Titled in the plate lower left (THE SCOUT - NEZ PERCÉ), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 7 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches. Sheet: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number is written in pencil on the verso.
