At the top, a crown of glossy red curls against clear sky blue, then softens into lemon, lime and spring green, deepens through teal and blue, and comes to rest in a rich band of violet at the base. To the right, a wide wall of golden yellow glows like sunlight on a distant field. Fine ripples, tiny speckles and soft marbling mark the luminous paint wherever the hues meet. Colangelo released the colors in sequence and let them spread and blend as the panel tilted beneath them. From her TERRAIN series, it feels like arrival after a long wait, joyful, abundant and full of light.

A burst of pure color like this belongs somewhere passed every morning: a kitchen wall, an entry nook or the space above a desk. Crisp white walls or pale oak shelving keep it fresh and generous, and simple ceramics and a few plants let the painting lead, lifting even the grayest day.

Mixed media on panel, 14 x 14 in (35.6 x 35.6 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
