After the Storm stacks broad bands of red, warm apricot, sunny yellow, fresh green, cobalt and violet softly down the panel, their edges waving into one another like light spreading after rain. Through the middle, a stream of bright blue falls from top to bottom, breaking into drops and small pools that glint against the smooth bands behind. It reads like the last of the rain still trickling down, or a path drawn straight through the color. Colangelo laid the bands in soft layers first, then poured the blue and let it trace its own line downward. Part of her RIVERS series, it holds a feeling of pure relief, fresh and full of grace, after a hard season.
A joy to come home to, it belongs in an entryway, a kitchen or a bright hallway that greets the household each morning. Pale walls, light oak and simple, uncluttered furnishings let the palette lead, and a soft neutral runner keeps the focus on the painting rather than competing with it.
Mixed media on panel, 6 x 24 in (15.2 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
