Sleepless is built around a dark column rising through the middle of the panel, rust and umber shading into deep indigo. Its glossy surface is crazed with fine cracks and gleaming specks, like a night sky that will not keep still, and arms of black reach restlessly to either side. Small bright thoughts flicker around it: looping yellow and orange scribbles at top and bottom, a cool blue figure keeping watch in an upper corner, a single pink dot and a flare of red at the base. Colangelo poured the layers and let them crack and shift as they dried, and those surprises gave the piece its pulse. Within her RIVERS series, it is honest about the long night and still full of quiet light.
Night owls will appreciate it in a bedroom, a late-night study or a library corner. Deep charcoal or oxblood walls give it a rich setting, and a single reading lamp, worn leather, walnut shelving and velvet upholstery complete the mood after dark, when the glossy surface truly comes alive.
Mixed media on panel, 6 x 24 in (15.2 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
