A lively green stream winds down the center, curling into a small hook at the top before wriggling to the bottom, its glossy skin full of tiny bubbles and rusty speckles. Around it everything is in conversation: a bright red line racing alongside, golden dashes skipping between, deep crimson pooling on the right, and silvery gray and black strokes tapping out a rhythm on the left. Red dots scatter like laughter. Colangelo poured quickly and let the colors run into one another, delighting in where they chose to go. Within her RIVERS series, it bubbles over with the simple happiness of moving water and good company.

Lively and funny, it would bring a smile to a playroom, a kitchen or a narrow hallway full of family noise. Bright cabinets, woven baskets and sunny accents suit its playful spirit and keep the room light. It is easy to group with other cheerful pieces.

Mixed media on panel, 6 x 24 in (15.2 x 61 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
