Gentle Days V, an abstract expressionist mixed media painting on panel by Monterey artist Mandie Colangelo, is a clear white day with four colors walking through it in their own time. On the left, black marks break into short dashes and dots like footsteps on fresh snow. Beside them a bright lime line runs long and sure, while golden yellow appears and disappears in neat segments. To the right, red and coral gather into fuller shapes, spilling sideways in soft blooms before falling to the bottom edge. Every line sits raised and glossy, catching the light along its edges. Colangelo poured with an open hand and let each color find its own rhythm. The fifth Gentle Days panel from her RIVERS series moves with the cheerful tempo of an ordinary good day.
Crisp and graphic, it brings a fresh rhythm to a modern kitchen, a home office or a minimalist hallway. Clean surfaces, matte dark fixtures and light oak suit it well, and it fits neatly into a grouping with the other panels of the set. Its rhythm reads cleanly from across the room.
Mixed media on panel, 6 x 24 in (15.2 x 61 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
