An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Lifting the Net - Quinault shows two Quinault fishermen in a dugout canoe on misty water, one in the stern holding a long pole while the other leans over the side to haul in a net with a fish caught in the mesh. Floats trail across the foreground and a wooded headland fades into the fog at right. The Quinault live on the Pacific coast of Washington's Olympic Peninsula. Curtis made the photograph in 1912, and it was published in 1913 in Volume 9, which covers the Coast Salish peoples, the Chimakum, the Quileute and the Willapa.
From Volume 9, facing page 52. Printed on Japanese vellum, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, with a smooth, creamy surface that holds the fine detail of the gravure. Titled in the plate lower left (LIFTING THE NET - QUINAULT), with "From Copyright Photograph 1912 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 5 x 7 1/8 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number is written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
