Passed Down sets strips of humble material side by side like figures lined up for an old portrait. On the left, dark open netting stretches over pale squares, followed by a coarse brown mesh with loose threads trailing free. A narrow band of cork glows warm and sandy beside a ribbon of burlap printed in bold black chevrons. To the right, a soft gray felted layer gives way to a translucent white mesh grid, light and airy as lace. Colangelo gathered these textures and pressed them together, giving each its own voice while letting them belong to one another. From her RELIC series, it feels like an inheritance, carried with care from one hand to the next.
Rich in texture, it belongs among heirlooms, in a hallway, a den or a study lined with old photographs. Leather, woven baskets, linen and well-loved wood feel at home beside it. A vintage trunk, a shelf of old books or a worn leather chair nearby makes a fitting companion.
Mixed media with fabric collage on panel, 14 x 14 in (35.6 x 35.6 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
