An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Chinook Female Type is a close portrait of an elderly Chinook woman, her face deeply lined, her eyes half closed and her gray hair loose around her face, wrapped in a dark plaid blanket. The Chinook lived along the lower Columbia River near its mouth. Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Wallawalla, Umatilla, Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes.
From Volume 8, facing page 84. Its companion plate, Chinook Female Profile, faces page 86. Printed on Holland Van Gelder, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets. Titled in the plate lower left (CHINOOK FEMALE TYPE), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
