An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Interior of Sun Dance Lodge - Cheyenne looks inside a Southern Cheyenne Sun Dance lodge. Sunlight falls across the floor, a thick tree trunk rises from a mound of earth, young leafy trees stand inside the lodge, figures in ceremonial dress stand in the shade at left, and a figure sits on a bed of brush at right, under the canvas cover of the lodge. The Southern Cheyenne live in western Oklahoma. Curtis made the photograph in 1927, and it was published in 1930 in Volume 19, which covers the Indians of Oklahoma: the Wichita, the Southern Cheyenne, the Oto and the Comanche, along with the Peyote religion.
From Volume 19, facing page 120, at the start of Curtis's account of the Southern Cheyenne Sun Dance. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (INTERIOR OF SUN DANCE LODGE - CHEYENNE), with "From Copyright Photograph 1927 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image.
Image: 5 1/4 x 7 5/8 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
