Broad streams of cherry red, marigold and tangerine sweep diagonally from the lower left, flanked by ribbons of cobalt and indigo and a quick flash of grass green. The red lies wide and glossy at the center, pocked with bubbles, while the orange beside it breaks into marbled cells and lacy edges. Colangelo poured with a fast hand and tipped the panel so the colors traveled together, splitting and rejoining as they ran. Part of her RIVERS series, it carries the happy, breathless urgency of heading back to the people who are waiting.

Full of momentum, it makes a cheerful welcome in an entryway or along a hallway that leads toward the kitchen. Warm white paint, a wooden bench and a woven runner give the palette room to move. A row of brass hooks or a vintage enamel bowl for keys keeps the arrival point inviting.

Mixed media on panel, 12 x 12 in (30.5 x 30.5 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
