An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Wichita Summer Arbor shows a long, low arbor so thickly grown over with leafy vines that it looks like a green mound, its open front showing the posts and the shade inside, with poles leaning against one end and tall trees arching overhead. The Wichita are a Caddoan-speaking people of the southern Plains whose tribal home today is in Oklahoma. Curtis made the photograph in 1927, and it was published in 1930 in Volume 19, which covers the Indians of Oklahoma: the Wichita, the Southern Cheyenne, the Oto and the Comanche, along with the Peyote religion.
From Volume 19, facing page 44. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (WICHITA SUMMER ARBOR), with "From Copyright Photograph 1927 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image.
Image: 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number is written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.

A clean, warm impression on tissue that lies flat on its mount. The mount keeps its natural deckle edges and the original stitch holes along the bound edge, as issued, with small nicks at the stitch points. A faint crease line runs across the lower margin, and there are scattered small foxing spots in the margins, all well outside the image. No tears noted. Sold unframed. less
