Beneath it, a blue circle shines with pale rings, like light on water, and beside it a smaller sphere burns electric green around a crust of white and a flash of cobalt. Green spray scatters into the dark corner like a trail of sparks. Each shape seems lit from within, as though the panel could keep a room bright by itself. Colangelo haloed every pour with spray and let the colors bleed wherever they wanted. One of her COSMOS paintings, it is about warmth found in the dark, small but sure.

This piece comes alive in the evening, in a den, a living room corner or a study where lamps are switched on at dusk. Charcoal walls, brass fixtures and a velvet chair in midnight tones suit it well. A smoked glass vase or a black marble side table adds a polished, moody finish.

Mixed media on panel, 12 x 12 in (30.5 x 30.5 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
