Before the World Was Named captures something about to begin. A deep green form gathers itself within a cobalt sky, its crown stirring with silver and lavender, while a warm yellow glow rises beneath it like the first morning. Tiny sparks of gold drift across the darkness. Poured layers settle into glossy pools, fine spray turns to grain, and edges ripple where the paint chose its own stopping point. Colangelo began without a plan and let the materials lead, welcoming each surprise as it arrived. A work from her COSMOS series, it feels less painted than revealed, a quiet moment of wonder held just as it happened.
Best kept close, it suits a wall passed every morning, a spot beside the bed or a reading nook where the day begins or ends. Ink-dark or warm white walls let it shine, and a brass picture light or an antique mirror nearby answers its glints. Dark walnut and a velvet throw complete the mood.
Mixed media on panel, 12 x 12 in (30.5 x 30.5 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
