Clouds of gray, cornflower blue and sea green drift across a pale ground, while a gentle oval of moss green floats near the center and a warm peach glow rises from below like first light at the horizon. Fine speckles of white, gold and deep blue settle over it all, so delicate they appear only up close. The longer the surface is studied, the more of these tiny points emerge. Colangelo built the image from light veils of spray, letting one color fade into the next until the edges disappeared. Part of her COSMOS series, it asks for nothing and offers quiet in return, a presence felt more than seen.

Softness is its gift. It rests easily in a nursery, a guest bedroom or a reading corner where the pace is slow. Warm plaster, cream boucle and washed linen blend gracefully with it, and an ash wood chair nearby completes the calm. It also suits a hallway where a pause is welcome.

Mixed media on panel, 8 x 10 in (20.3 x 25.4 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
