Inside, the color moves in currents: aqua, sea glass and cobalt swirl together, threaded with acid yellow and pooled in small dark hollows. The surface is ridged and rippled like a tide pool at low water, while the dark teal ground holds faint shadows of plum. Colangelo tilted the canvas this way and that, letting the pour spread until it found its own edges and came to rest. Part of her TERRAIN series, it is about arrival, reaching calm water after a long crossing and finally being able to rest.

It makes a lovely surprise on a bathroom shelf, a bedside table or a desk by the window. Glazed pottery, potted ferns and light linen echo the palette, and it is a thoughtful gift for someone drawn to the sea. Easy to tuck almost anywhere, it rewards a close look.

Mixed media on canvas, 7 x 7 in (17.8 x 17.8 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
