Almost Silence is a night sky in deep green, crossed by a fine white mist that runs diagonally like a river of light. The mist is dense in some places and thin in others, and larger dots settle here and there, a few bright and round, most no bigger than a grain of salt. In the upper corner, a faint wash of violet glows at the edge of the dark. The longer the eye rests, the more stars appear. Colangelo built this sky from layers of spray and flicked paint, letting each pass fall where it would. A COSMOS piece, it holds the hush of a late night outdoors and the comfort of feeling small.
Calm and nocturnal, it suits a bedroom where the day winds down or a reading chair lit by a single lamp. Walnut, cognac leather and warm brass feel rich around it, and it looks especially lovely on a wall painted forest or olive. Wool throws deepen the mood in a den or library corner.
Mixed media on panel, 10 x 10 in (25.4 x 25.4 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
