Rust and Memory has the look of an old ship's hull or a garden gate left for decades in salt air. Glossy sea green swirls across the upper half, scattered with clustered grains that rise like lichen. Lower down, the texture deepens into knots of copper and rust, crusty and raised, set in a pool of warm amber that shines like varnish. Every bump and bead catches the light differently. Colangelo let poured layers and gritty materials settle together, so the panel could map its own patina, as though time had finished the work. From her RELIC series, it honors worn things and the beauty only age can give.
Coastal in spirit, it belongs in a cottage hallway or on a shelf beside old books and found objects. Weathered oak, terracotta pots and aged brass suit its palette, and a limewashed wall or reclaimed wood paneling gives it a welcoming backdrop. A jute rug or a stoneware jug keeps the room relaxed.
Mixed media on panel, 8 x 8 in (20.3 x 20.3 cm).
Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.
Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
