Magenta, cobalt, sky blue, lime and tangerine erupt in thick, raised swirls across a saffron ground, while black shapes and teal spray crowd the edges. The surface is lumpy, ridged, glossy in places and gritty in others, so it changes with every shift of light. Colangelo piled on layers, poured, pressed and sprayed, letting each one react to the last in ways she could not predict. Part of her FORCE series, it is a portrait of delight that refuses to behave.

It brings a lift to a desk, a kitchen shelf or a home office, anywhere it will be seen often. Deep navy walls, bold glazed ceramics and dark steel hold their own beside it, and on open shelving in a crisp kitchen it stands out among cookbooks and enamelware.

Mixed media on panel, 10 x 10 in (25.4 x 25.4 cm).

Mandie Colangelo is an abstract painter based in Monterey, California. Raised in Arizona, she painted from childhood and wrote music, then built a creative career that moved through fashion, design, jewelry, graphic design and photography. Each chapter sharpened her eye for color, form and material. A season of profound change brought her back to the brush, and painting is now her primary practice.

Working in the abstract expressionist tradition, she builds her surfaces from acrylic, resin, street inks, pigment powders, fabric and, most distinctively, plastic, and treats each painting as an open experiment. Her paintings move between celebration and loss, memory and renewal. As she puts it: “More than anything, I hope my artwork inspires hope, joy, and reflection in those who experience it.”
