Giffuni (1919–2009), Hippie portrays a young man wearing a headband and peace-symbol pendant. His upward gaze lends the composition a thoughtful, reflective quality, while the subject evokes the spirit of the counterculture era.

Giffuni’s sensitive handling of pastel is evident throughout the portrait. Soft layers of color bring warmth and dimension to the face and figure, complemented by expressive drawing and a subdued background. Presented beneath glazing in a gold-tone frame with a light-colored mat, the work makes a distinctive statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Flora B. Giffuni was the founder of the Pastel Society of America, established in 1972, and played an influential role in promoting pastel as a fine-art medium.

An Old Bergen Art Guild exhibition label on the reverse identifies the artist, title and medium. The label also records an exhibition price of $500.
