An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Modern Paviotso Beadwork is a still life of beaded baskets laid out on a blanket: bowls and jars covered in glass beadwork with zigzag, diamond and cross designs, set around a large coiled tray. The Paviotso are the Northern Paiute of western Nevada. Curtis made the photograph in 1924, and it was published in 1926 in Volume 15, which covers the Southern California Shoshoneans, the Diegueños, the Plateau Shoshoneans and the Washo.
From Volume 15, facing page 76. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (MODERN PAVIOTSO BEADWORK), with "From Copyright Photograph 1924 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image.
Image: 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The verso carries a printed Cardozo Collection label with the plate's title and date.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
