Curtis's The North American Indian. Fishing for Smelt in the Surf - Trinidad Yurok shows a lone Yurok fisherman wading into the breaking surf, bent forward over his net pole, with sea stacks rising from the water behind him. The moving water blurs softly around his legs. Trinidad is a Yurok village site on the northern California coast. Curtis made the photograph in 1923, and it was published in 1924 in Volume 13, which covers the Hupa, Yurok, Karok, Wiyot, Tolowa and Tututni, Shasta, Achomawi and Klamath.

From Volume 13, facing page 80. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (FISHING FOR SMELT IN THE SURF - TRINIDAD YUROK), with "From Copyright Photograph 1923 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image.
