An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Mono Basketry is a still life of Mono baskets set out on the ground: tall conical burden baskets, oval trays, and twined caps and bowls with banded designs. The Mono people live on both sides of the Sierra Nevada in east-central California. Curtis made the photograph in 1924, and it was published in 1926 in Volume 15, which covers the Southern California Shoshoneans, the Diegueños, the Plateau Shoshoneans and the Washo.
From Volume 15, facing page 62. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (MONO BASKETRY), with "From Copyright Photograph 1924 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image.
Image: 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number is written in pencil on the verso, which also shows part of the Van Gelder watermark.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
