A signed and numbered limited edition print of Howard Terpning's "The Apache Fire Makers," published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1993. Two Apache men build a fire in a rocky clearing below a canyon wall. One kneels over a small stack of kindling while the other, in a broad-brimmed hat and white shirt, blows on a smoking bundle of tinder cupped in his hands, the smoke drifting off to the left. Morning sun rakes across the rocks and the dry, rust-colored grass behind them, and a saddle and gear lie on the ground in front. The painting won the Cowboy Artists of America Gold Medal for Oil in 1985. On the documentation card that comes with the print, Terpning writes that he saw this spot in the mountains north of Tucson ten years before he painted it, and that he had the light travel from right to left across the figures, with the smoke carrying on out of the picture, to build a pattern of light and shadow. It was late in the year, and the light on the grass had a warm color he liked.
Lithograph published by The Greenwich Workshop of Trumbull, Connecticut, from Terpning's original oil painting. Signed "Terpning" and numbered 29/1000 in pencil within the image at lower left, above the plate signature "© Terpning 1985 CA." The pencil is faint against the dark paint in that corner. The margin carries the publisher's copyright line, the title and the artist's name. The edition was 1,000 signed and consecutively numbered prints plus 50 artist's proofs and 2 printer's proofs.
Howard Terpning was born in Illinois in 1927 and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art. He first made his name as an illustrator, painting covers for Time and Newsweek and posters for films including Doctor Zhivago and The Sound of Music, before moving to Arizona in 1977 to paint the West. Often called the "Storyteller of the Native American," he won numerous gold and silver medals from the Cowboy Artists of America and the Prix de West from the National Academy of Western Art.
Comes with the original Greenwich Workshop portfolio folder with its title label and the documentation card with Terpning's notes on the painting and his biography.
