A signed and numbered limited edition print of Howard Terpning's "The Strength of Eagles," published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1992. A Plains elder in a beaded headband and a war bonnet with a long red trailer grips a lance hung with eagle feathers that rises past his shoulder, his weathered face set and unsmiling against a loose, mottled background of rust, gold and blue. On the documentation card that comes with the print, Terpning writes that eagles were powerful medicine to the Plains people and stood for strength and power, and that he chose not to name the man's tribe because he felt the emotions in his face, sadness along with strength of character, determination and a sense of survival, are universal.
Lithograph published by The Greenwich Workshop of Trumbull, Connecticut, from Terpning's painting. Signed "Terpning" and numbered 72/1250 in pencil within the image at lower left, with the plate signature "© Terpning 1992" below. The margin carries the publisher's copyright line, the title and the artist's name. The edition was 1,250 signed and consecutively numbered prints plus 50 artist's proofs and 2 printer's proofs.
Howard Terpning was born in Illinois in 1927 and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art. He first made his name as an illustrator, painting covers for Time and Newsweek and posters for films including Doctor Zhivago and The Sound of Music, before moving to Arizona in 1977 to paint the West. Often called the "Storyteller of the Native American," he won numerous gold and silver medals from the Cowboy Artists of America and the Prix de West from the National Academy of Western Art.
Comes with the original Greenwich Workshop portfolio folder with its title label, the documentation card with Terpning's notes on the painting and his biography, and the Greenwich Workshop print care sheet.
