A pencil signed and numbered limited edition print of Carl Brenders' "In Northern Hunting Grounds," released by Mill Pond Press in January 1993. A Canada lynx moves across a rocky slope strewn with pine needles, head turned toward the viewer, black ear tufts raised and long hind legs stretched out behind it. Every hair of its thick coat is painted in Brenders' exacting detail against the hard gray rock. In the notes that come with the print, Brenders wrote that he left the snow out so he could paint the rocky background, that he liked the contrast of soft fur against hard rock, and that the white inside of the back legs is the only thing that gives the lynx away in this kind of landscape.
Offset lithograph printed in Canada by Herzig Somerville Ltd. on acid-free, pH neutral coated paper, published from Brenders' 1992 mixed media painting on illustration board. Pencil signed by the artist at lower right and numbered 1406/1750 at lower left, with the plate signature "© C Brenders 92" in the image. The margin carries the title. The edition was 1,750 signed and numbered prints plus 76 artist's proofs.
Carl Brenders was born in 1937 near Antwerp, Belgium, and studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Antwerp and later in Berchem. He illustrated more than 20 books in the series The Secret Life of Animals, and his work has been shown regularly in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's "Birds in Art" exhibition and in its 1987 "Wildlife in Art" show.
Comes with the original Mill Pond Press folder with its gold MPP seal and edition label, the certificate of authenticity, Brenders' card about the painting, and his biography card.
