A pencil signed and numbered limited edition print of Carl Brenders' "Top of the World - Polar Bear," released by Mill Pond Press in June 1995. A polar bear lies stretched across a rock on the Arctic tundra, its head low between its front paws and its long dark claws gripping the stone. Orange lichen, patches of snow, red tundra plants and dry grass surround it, and every hair of its cream colored coat is painted in Brenders' exacting detail. In his notes on the painting, Brenders wrote that he wanted to set the bear's powerful claws against its delicate white fur, and that the calm look in its eyes hides a dangerous predator.
Offset lithograph printed in Canada by Herzig-Somerville Limited on acid-free, pH neutral coated paper, published from Brenders' 1995 mixed media painting on board. Pencil signed by the artist at lower right and numbered 280/3500 at lower left, with the plate signature "© C Brenders 95" in the image. The margin carries the title and the Latin name, Ursus maritimus. The edition was 3,500 signed and numbered prints plus 76 artist's proofs.
Carl Brenders was born in 1937 near Antwerp, Belgium, and studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Antwerp and later in Berchem. He illustrated the book series The Secret Life of Animals, and his paintings have been shown in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's "Birds in Art" and "Wildlife in Art" exhibitions. Harry N. Abrams published a book of his work, "Wildlife: The Nature Paintings of Carl Brenders," with Mill Pond Press.
Comes with the original Mill Pond Press folder with its seal and edition label, the certificate of authenticity, and the "About This Work of Art" sheet with Brenders' notes on the painting and his biography.
