The piece is distinguished by its dense openwork carving of flowers, scrolling foliage, and geometric motifs, finished in layers of blue, red, yellow, green, and white.

The frieze and jambs are elaborately pierced and carved with repeated floral rosettes, curling scrolls, and stylized leaves. A shaped arch frames the fire opening, while the outer frame and upper section retain a strong blue ground with contrasting bands of colour. The carving is executed in wood and retains its original polychrome decoration, now aged and worn in places, revealing the layered history of the surface.

The reverse shows the same carved openwork largely unpainted, typical of these architectural elements. The piece is offered as a decorative fireplace surround; as with all wooden mantels of this type, the firebox would have been lined separately in brick, stone, or metal.

A bold and decorative example of South Asian painted architectural carving, well suited as a focal point in an eclectic or characterful interior.
