A rustic chest in walnut, Italy, dated 1799.
The date is carved into the front panel, set in a scroll of leaves and grapes, with a bird to either side. The uprights are carved with an urn and a spray of foliage, each in a scalloped border.
An iron lock and hasp sit at the centre. The chest stands on block feet.
The lid opens on iron strap hinges. Inside, to the left, is a small lidded compartment beside the main well.
The wood shows old woodworm. On a chest of this age that old trace is part of the history of the piece, not a fresh fault.
