Magnificent and rare Art Deco animal sculpture of a Royal Pheasant, created by the renowned sculptor and ceramicist Charles Lemanceau and produced around 1930 by the prestigious Saint-Clément factory.
This "Royal Pheasant" model is a particularly sought-after piece, produced in very limited quantities in this variation. It is distinguished by its deep green glaze enhanced with exquisite gilt details (crested head, beak, plumage, and legs), offering a striking contrast typical of the refined Art Deco style. The piece still bears its original "Clément – Céramique d'art" label on the base.
About the artist: Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980) A graduate of the École des Arts Appliqués and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Charles Lemanceau is one of the leading masters of Art Deco animal sculpture. Having exhibited at the Salon d'Automne as early as 1925 alongside major figures such as Henri Matisse and Le Corbusier, he made his mark in the 1930s through his collaboration with the Lunéville-Saint-Clément porcelain factory. His unique style is characterized by clean, geometric, and extremely dynamic lines, which enhance the grace of the animal world. This piece has an attribution mark,
