An impressive Italian double bed dating from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in mahogany with exquisite birdseye maple veneer panels.
A remarkable example of Renaissance Revival furniture, reflecting the architectural grandeur and eclectic decorative taste of the late 19th century.
Distinguished by its monumental proportions, sophisticated combination of contrasting woods, and elaborate architectural detailing, this bed embodies the craftsmanship and decorative richness of traditional Italian cabinetmaking.
The most distinctive feature of this exceptional bed is its monumental double-arched headboard, standing 192 cm (75.6 inches) high, featuring striking birdseye maple panels framed in richly finished mahogany.
The two imposing arches, enhanced by concentric moulded frames, create a remarkable architectural composition inspired by classical and Renaissance forms.
The headboard is further embellished with finely turned and carved columns, projecting architectural capitals, geometric decorative elements, and delicate turned finials, all arranged in a harmonious and carefully balanced design.
Particularly noteworthy are the decorative metal monograms positioned within the upper mahogany sections of the two arches, adding a distinctive and refined ornamental detail.
The extensive use of birdseye maple, prized for its distinctive swirling grain and characteristic small eye-shaped markings, represents one of the bed's most appealing features.
The warm golden tones and subtle figuring of the maple create an elegant contrast with the darker mahogany, emphasizing the architectural composition and highlighting the quality of the woodworking.
The footboard, measuring 112 cm (44.1 inches) in height, echoes the decorative language of the headboard, featuring two large framed panels, shaped upper profiles, turned architectural elements, and beautifully carved details.
Its structure is supported by distinctive rounded, turned feet.
The two original side rails display an elegant curved profile, rising towards both ends and becoming lower towards the centre. This unusual design visually softens the substantial structure while maintaining the bed's impressive proportions.
The bed is complete with its original components: headboard, footboard, and both side rails.
Provenance and Matching Furniture
The bed originally formed part of an important 19th-century bedroom ensemble, which also included a matching pair of bedside cabinets, featuring similar arched architectural elements and contrasting wood veneer panels.
The ensemble comes from the same interior as a monumental Umbertine-style cabinet with an elaborately carved upper section, reflecting the refined decorative taste of an important late 19th-century interior.
A Statement Piece for Contemporary Interiors
with its monumental dimensions and extraordinary architectural presence, this bed offers a striking focal point for an elegant bedroom.
While preserving the distinctive character and craftsmanship of 19th-century Italian furniture, it is equally suited to sophisticated contemporary interiors.
The contrast between its richly detailed antique woodwork and the clean lines of modern design creates an exceptionally refined visual effect.
Neutral walls, natural materials, understated linen bedding, contemporary lighting, and carefully selected minimalist furnishings allow the bed's architectural beauty to take centre stage, transforming it into an almost sculptural statement piece.
An exceptional furnishing for collectors, antique enthusiasts, and interior designers seeking an impressive historical piece capable of bringing individuality, character, and timeless elegance to a contemporary or traditional interior.
