A broad, luminous sky opens above an arrangement of shoreline fragments and water, punctuated by fine burgundy and deep dark accents.

The composition moves between distance and surface. A diagonal sweep draws the eye towards the horizon, while horizontal bands suggest tidal channels, sandbanks and exposed land. These forms remain deliberately open, capturing the memory and atmosphere of a coastline rather than describing a specific location.

Successive layers of oil paint, applied and scraped back with a palette knife, create a richly varied surface. Broken edges, underlying colours and contrasts between thin passages and thicker paint give the landscape depth. The restrained palette balances the warmth of the earth with the cooler light of sky and water.

Sophie Dumont is a French contemporary painter based in France (Normandy). Her work explores landscape, memory and the passage of time through layered colour and textured oil paint.
