Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1920-1929 from Persia, this antique 2x3 gift-sized Persian Sarouk rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Antique collection. Featuring a dramatic midnight navy ground and a vibrant terracotta-red border, the composition presents a finely articulated floral medallion flanked by symmetrical botanical sprays in a jewel-like miniature format.
On the Design:
The weaving legacy of the Arak or formerly Sultanabad province in central Persia represents one of the most celebrated chapters in textile art history. Within this famed weaving district, the village of Sarouk gained international renown for producing carpets of exceptional structural integrity, dense knotting, and velvety, high-luster wool. While large-scale Sarouk carpets were commissioned to anchor grand Western salons, small-format *pushti* or gift-sized mats occupied an equally prestigious position within the atelier. The primary field is defined by an opulent, midnight-navy or *sormeyi* ground, achieved through traditional natural indigo dyeing that provides a deep, receding canvas for the vibrant floral ornamentation. At the center of the composition rests a sharp, cruciform medallion formed by radiating floral rosettes and lobed palmette shields.
Flanking this central core along the vertical axis are symmetrical, vase-inspired *gol-dani* motifs from which lush *gol-farang* (Western-influenced botanical sprays) erupt and spread across the field. The floral elements are delicately outlined in tones of rich madder terracotta, soft salmon pink, ochre, and sky blue, creating an extraordinary three-dimensional contrast against the dark background. Enclosing the central plane is a classic, deeply saturated terracotta-red main border decorated with a rhythmic, continuous trailing vine of multi-petaled rosettes and lotus palmettes, bounded by crisp slate-blue guard bands. This rare miniature masterwork offers an exquisite historical accent piece—equally suited as a luxurious entryway statement, an elevated table dressing, or a framed textile art display.
