A gabled house and a bare, forked tree stand against a sky that moves from pale rose to saturated yellow in this expressionist oil on canvas, painted with the loaded brush and high-key palette of Fauvism. Warm yellows, ochres and oranges carry most of the surface, with plum and violet in the tree and rooflines, a few touches of blue for shadow, and passages of bare canvas left open between strokes. The impasto is moderate to heavy in the house and foreground and thinner in the sky.
The handling sits comfortably beside the Bay Area Figurative and West Coast Expressionist painting of the later twentieth century, though the scene, late autumn with foliage still glowing behind the bare branches, could as easily be New England or eastern Canada. The painting is monogrammed “P.C.” in white over a dark brown passage at lower right and is undated; the artist has not been identified. A label from the now-closed MeSH Gallery, 6984 McKinley Street, Sebastopol, California, is affixed to the dust cover, and the gallery was active around 2001, consistent with a date in the late 1990s.
The canvas measures 16 x 20 inches sight and is presented in a natural wood box frame two inches deep, with a paper dust cover and hanging wire on the verso. Photographs were white-balanced to a gray card under daylight-balanced lighting; colors may display slightly differently across screens.
