Sun-baked ochre, terracotta and oxidized iron tones give this mixed media panel by Tom Calenberg the stratified look of canyon sandstone. The fourth work in his Eclipse Series is an organic abstraction of torn-edged planes. A slate and umber mass rests in a cup of gold- and copper-toned leaf, and olive veins run down to a narrow stem. At left, a deep navy field is crossed by a thin arc of red shading to yellow, the ring of an annular eclipse that gives the series its name.
The work was sold through Artifact Creations, the artist’s studio and gallery in Bellingham, Washington; Calenberg now works out of Durango, Colorado. The verso retains the gallery label, the artist’s business card and the original gallery card inscribed “Eclipse Series #4, Tom Calenberg.” The panel floats within a wide wood frame finished in a textured rust glaze that echoes the palette. The sight size is 10 x 10 inches.
Photographs were white-balanced to a gray card under daylight-balanced lighting; colors may display slightly differently across screens.

The painted surface is clean, with no losses, cracking or lifting of the leaf observed. There are a few minute dark specks in the paint layer near the lower right edge. The frame shows light handling wear to the textured finish at the outer edges, and the mitered corners are tight. The kraft dust cover is intact, with a small dark stain at lower left; all three labels are firmly attached. less
