The Winged Victory of Samothrace, or Nike of Samothrace, is one of the great masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture. Created in the 2nd century BC and originally discovered on the island of Samothrace, the monumental figure has an extraordinary sense of movement, power and presence.
Here, she stands within the vast, cathedral-like interior of the Louvre, where the monumental scale of the architecture might ordinarily overwhelm a single work of art. Yet the opposite occurs. Despite the immense space surrounding her, the sculpture commands the entire interior.
The absence of a head and arms seems only to intensify her presence. Drapery caught by an imagined wind, powerful wings and the dramatic forward stance give the figure an almost divine authority. She does not simply occupy the space — she dominates it, a solitary female presence whose energy and aura remain undiminished by the enormous architecture around her.
