An important early mason's patent ironstone china cider mug, made at mason's fenton stone works, lane delph, staffordshire, circa 1820. Its large, gently flared octagonal body and spreading foot are paired with an ambitious moulded hydra handle, the animal head forming the upper attachment to the body.
the piece is decorated in the sought-after red scale conversation group, a mason's chinoiserie pattern documented in a guide to mason's patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813–1848, published by the masons collectors' club. Iron-red scale panels frame chinese garden scenes, hand-enriched in orange, rose, green, yellow, blue and black enamels. The decorated inner rim and orange-lustre hydra handle add to the exceptional finish of the design.
the underside retains mason's early black transfer-printed crown-and-banner mark, mason's / patent ironstone china. Its conspicuously wide letter spacing identifies the elongated version used circa 1815–1825. Large cider mugs of this period are uncommon; the combination of this substantial form, red scale conversation group decoration, sculptural hydra handle and early c.1820 mark is particularly rare.
dimensions: weight 1052 g. Height 12.8 cm. Width including handle 20.5 cm. Diameter 17.5 cm. The substantial body gives a clear, resonant ring when carefully tapped.
condition: several small firing cracks at the points where the handle joins the body, wear to the gilt rim and a few pinhead enamel losses. The brown kiln-stilt / glaze-contraction line beneath the lower handle attachment is an original firing feature, not later damage. Examined under uv. Otherwise in excellent antique condition.
