Antique bronze Mephisto candlesticks in the Gothic Revival style, dating from circa 1880. The Mephisto figures are seated on stools and hold up vases decorated with bats.
Mephistopheles, the devil from the Faust legend, became a recurring figure in nineteenth-century decorative art. In Gothic Revival objects, his image was often combined with dark romantic and macabre motifs such as bats, flames and Gothic tracery. These sculptural compositions brought together theatrical symbolism associated with Goethe’s Faust and the medieval-inspired aesthetics of the Gothic Revival.
The candlesticks are executed in patinated bronze and originate from France. They are in very good condition.
Each candlestick measures 18.5 cm in height, 8.5 cm in length and 8.5 cm in width.
