A dramatic and rare pair of monumental Italian mid-century ceramic sculptures depicting the King and Queen chess pieces, created in Italy during the 1960s–1970s. Standing at an impressive 33 cm (13 inches) in height, the pair presents a striking fusion of Pop Art theatricality and medieval revivalism. The King is crowned with a regal ermine band and surmounted by a red cross pattée finial, featuring a heavy mustache and beard hand-carved in relief. The Queen wears a lobed coronet with an inverted heart cartouche and an elegant, serene expression. Both figures are executed in high-contrast glazes: brilliant vermilion-red bases and cowls are juxtaposed against craquelure-glazed white ermine collars and naturalistic ochre surfaces that masterfully imitate aged carved timber. with their substantial presence and pedestal-style bases, they serve as extraordinary statement centerpieces, mantle accents, or conversational floor/console sculptures.
