An atmospheric early 20th-century California coastal seascape by listed American Impressionist painter Francis Stillwell Dixon (1879–1967), depicting the dramatic Pacific surf and rocky shoreline believed to be at Point Lobos, near Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
Point Lobos is one of the most celebrated painting locations in American art, having attracted generations of California Impressionists and plein air painters, including Guy Rose, William Merritt Chase, and Childe Hassam. Its rugged coastline, crashing waves, distinctive rock formations, and extraordinary coastal light made it a favorite subject of the early California art movement.
This beautifully executed oil painting captures the movement and luminosity of the Pacific, with rolling turquoise waves breaking against a rocky shoreline beneath a soft blue sky accented by delicate pink and lavender clouds. Dixon's confident, richly textured brushwork and harmonious palette convey the energy of the ocean and the distinctive atmosphere of the Carmel coastline.
Presented in an elegant gilt frame with classical geometric ornamentation, the painting embodies the timeless appeal of early California Impressionism.
About the Artist
Francis Stillwell Dixon (1879–1967) was an accomplished American painter associated with both New York and California. He studied at the Art Students League in New York under influential artists including Robert Henri, Frank Vincent DuMond, and Charles W. Hawthorne.
Between 1915 and 1917, Dixon lived in California and spent time painting in Carmel and Point Lobos. Only a limited number of works documenting his California period have surfaced, making paintings associated with this chapter of his career particularly interesting.
Dixon exhibited at important American art institutions, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and was especially recognized for his expressive marine landscapes.
