An expressive landscape painting by Thomas Albert Stone (1894–1978), a listed Canadian artist celebrated for his distinctive use of color and modernist interpretation of the natural landscape.
This striking composition depicts gently rolling hills, golden fields, and clusters of dark evergreen trees beneath a dramatic sky of soft lavender, dusty rose, and pale green. Stone's confident brushwork, richly textured surface, and unconventional color palette demonstrate the influence of Fauvism and Post-Impressionism on Canadian landscape painting.
The composition balances broad, sweeping fields of warm ochre and olive green with rhythmic groupings of dark trees, creating a compelling sense of depth and movement. Its simplified forms and expressive color relationships give the painting a distinctly modernist character.
Presented in an attractive, substantial gold-toned frame with a contrasting burgundy fabric liner, the painting offers an elegant combination of traditional presentation and modernist sensibility.
