An expressive vintage Italian ceramic pitcher vase by celebrated artist and ceramicist Marcello Fantoni (1915–2011). Made in Florence, Italy, this striking vessel exemplifies Fantoni's distinctive approach to sculptural form, experimental glazing, and modernist design.
The piece features a tall, gently tapered body with a substantial, organically curved handle. Its richly textured exterior is finished in a vibrant moss-green and yellow-green glaze, accented by darker speckling, earthy undertones, and subtle variations in color. The irregular, incised surface creates a dynamic interplay of texture and light, contrasting beautifully with the smooth, natural cream-colored interior.
The vessel's bold proportions and rustic yet sophisticated finish reflect the influence of Italian modernism and Brutalist ceramic design. Equally compelling as a standalone sculptural object or decorative vase, it offers an exceptional combination of craftsmanship, character, and visual presence.
Signed "Fantoni Italy" on the underside.
About the Artist
Marcello Fantoni (1915–2011) was an influential Italian ceramicist, sculptor, and designer whose work helped define postwar Italian studio ceramics.
Born in Florence, Fantoni studied at the prestigious Istituto d'Arte di Porta Romana, receiving instruction in ceramics, sculpture, and drawing. In 1936, he established his own ceramic workshop in Florence, producing both individually conceived artistic works and decorative objects.
Fantoni became internationally recognized for his innovative treatment of ceramic surfaces, expressive sculptural forms, and experimental glazes. His work frequently combined references to ancient Etruscan pottery with the modernist artistic movements of the mid-20th century.
His ceramics are represented in important museum collections internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Today, Fantoni's work is collected for its distinctive blend of Italian craftsmanship, modernist experimentation, and sculptural sophistication.
