In Fifty-Fifty, Sophie Dumont transforms a bookshelf into an architectural composition, balancing the familiar presence of books with the geometry of abstract painting. Upright volumes, stacked forms and interrupted rows create a measured interplay of vertical and horizontal lines.
A restrained palette of off-white, grey, beige, ochre and brown brings subtle variations of light and depth to the composition. Built through successive layers of oil paint, scraping and reworking, the textured surface softens the underlying structure and reveals traces of the painting’s development.
Part of Dumont’s ongoing Libraries series, this work explores books as carriers of memory and as elements of a constructed pictorial space. Its compact square format offers an intimate encounter with the artist’s distinctive approach to material and rhythm.
Sophie Dumont is a French contemporary artist based in Normandy. Her practice spans abstract landscapes, libraries and geometric compositions, connected by an exploration of layering, memory and space.
