This is an elegant and intricately crafted vintage hexagonal tray, made from Zitan wood (purple sandalwood) and decorated with delicate mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay.
The tray features a rich, dark brown-black wood grain with a smooth, lustrous finish. The raised, gallery-style edges are carved with openwork (reticulated) scrolling motifs and accented with small, evenly spaced round shell inlays. The center of the tray is adorned with a vibrant, intricately cut shell inlay scene depicting two birds in flight amongst blooming chrysanthemums and stylized rockery. The shell inlay features iridescent accents in green, purple, and pale yellow, adding a beautiful shimmer to the dark wood.
This piece beautifully combines traditional Chinese woodcraft with delicate shell inlay, making it a perfect serving tray for tea or small items, or a striking decorative display piece on a coffee table or console.
